As Rise of the Planet of the Apes is now at the cinema, last week I decided to get my hands on a copy of the 2001 release of Planet Of The Apes. What an awful film it is. The film starts off reasonably well, in that there is actually a planet in the universe which has apes on it. However, the acting is pretty shoddy, the apes dont act all that great, and the story fails by the minute.

After watching Planet of the Apes, I have to be honest and say I was wasnt looking all that forward to Rise of the Planet of the Apes. However, within minutes I was pretty gripped on it. It really had a blockbuster feel to it. James Franco plays his part well and as the film progresses, the story evolves. All this in a San Francisco backdrop rather than a space adventure, I would say the film worked a lot better than its predecessor 10 years earlier.

Human Traffic was released in 1999. For many years all I have heard is good things about it. I’m almost certain some people claim that this is a film you have to see before you die. It took me 12 years to finally get round to watching Human Traffic, and I have to be honest, I could have turned it off after 31 minutes.

The film can be summed up very easily. Its about a group of mates who go out like any other weekend and get high on a variety of drugs.

If I’m honest, not much happens in the film, there is no real lesson to be learned and it certainly doesn’t grip you from start to finish. The film focuses entirely on drug use and going to a club and getting ‘trashed’. Something which many 18-30 year olds do every week. Once the film had finished it felt like I had just been a tag along on someone’s night out.

Human Traffic is certainly not a film to get the heart racing. If there is a queue of Human Traffic, I’d rather drive!

For the first time in probably 10 years I rented a film from blockbuster. The film is one which I wanted to watch at the cinema. Unfortunately it was not at the cinema long enough for me to catch it. Submarine is a British film about a boy who is coming of age. You can read the synopsis on IMDB and it literally outlines the plot terribly. The film is not about a frustrated teenager trying to lose his virginity before he turns 16. Its about a boy with an imagination, discovering what life can bring and all that is to discover.

The film is like a diary entry. Outlining the main characters little thoughts. There are some great scenes about learning about relationships and dealing with parents and understanding that they are just children grown up a bit.

Submarine is a nice film to watch. Its that simple. Its not going to blow your mind, there are no special effects. Its a film which you will enjoy watching and will leave you feeling a little more positive than when you started.

This weekend I, like many others went to see the new and final Harry Potter film. I went to see the film having never read a Harry Potter book, nor have I watched any of the previous 7 films. I would certainly not describe myself as the number one Harry Potter fan. However, I went there with an open mind, 3D glasses and a bag of sweets.
Knowing nothing about Harry Potter made me probably the only neutral in the cinema. The film was quite dark, with plenty of action, and some fairly decent 3D effects.
My favourite scene of the film was when Harry and his friends jump off the dragon into the water. In 3D this looked particularly great. It was like you were in the water with him.
The film ended, and everyone clapped, this was the first time I had witnessed this in a UK cinema. Perhaps we are all becoming a little more American.

I own the DVD for Wicker Park. It is by no means a great film. But its one I wanted to watch at the cinema and never got round to seeing. My girlfriend spotted it in my DVD collection last night and decided she watched to watch it with me. I consider the film to be pretty good. My girlfriend was bored with it within 30 minutes. She claimed that Josh Hartnett is an awful, wooden, creepy actor. My question is simple, Is Josh Hartnett a terrible actor in Wicker Park?
If he is, I never noticed in the past. I think the film has a great soundtrack, and the story isn’t that bad either, its got a good twist in it. What more can you want from a light hearted film about a guy who becomes infatuated with a girl whilst he is in a relationship.

Blu-rays have been out some time now, yet many have not made the upgrade from DVD to blu-ray. I know many people are not bothered about High Definition. You only have to look at Sky HD and people watching football in pubs. It just doesn’t appeal to people. That is of course until they see it infront of them. The ‘too cool for school’ crowd will just say “well yeah, alright, its a bit clearer”. However the people who appreciate good quality, see high definition as an important upgrade. Apparently the step up from DVD to blu –ray is a bigger step up than VHS to DVD. This is something I couldn’t quite get my head around at first. But when you really look at it, VHS was poor, DVD was alright, Blu-ray is good, and who knows what is to come.

I myself only actually own one blu-ray and that says something as I am a huge film fan. This brings me onto my next subject which is the blu-rays every film lover should own.

Gladiator – Purely for the sand, the fighting and Rome.

Avatar – When I watched this in 2D at the cinema it blew my mind. The colours made me think I was in a dream.

The Matrix Trilogy – This is the one blu-ray I actually own, and its three Its worth it just for the scene where Neo and Trinity break Morpheus out of the Agents building, the bullets, the water… buy it!

Finding Nemo – Its pretty much what blu-ray was made for, vibrant colours and animation, a guaranteed winner.

Planet Earth – You’ll feel like youre there, its a journey.

When I heard there was a movie about facebook coming out, im going to be honest. I thought it was pretty lame. I heard one or two early reviews of ‘The Social Network’ and it was pretty much slated. However, these were clearly by journalists who had not seen the film and just fancied jumping on the whole “We hate facebook, we dont want a movie about facebook” bandwagon.

Once the film was released I heard nothing but glowing reviews of the film saying that its actually pretty, pretty, pretty good. However, I decided to boycott it and go for the alternative. Catfish is a movie about facebook, but shows the possibilities which come with what you can do with it. I could not possibly give anything away about the film other than tell you that Catfish is the real facebook movie of the year. From the start you wonder what on earth you are watching but as the movie goes on it unravels like a present on Christmas day.

The latest film to come on at my local cinema this week is ‘Water for Elephants’. A film staring Reese Witherspoon, Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz. The films starts off at a slow but enjoyable pace. Long scenes, setting the story. Once Jacob steps on foot the circus train the film really comes to life visually. The wardrobes are perfect for the 30s, the colour is vibrant and the animals look as sad as circus animals would being locked in 6ft by 3ft cell.

Let me take a moment now to warn you of definite spoilers to people who havnt seen the film. I was really enjoying the film, until about the point where Jacob and Marlena jump off the train. The film completely changed from that point on, the scenes seemed cut short, loose and rushed. It seemed to me that the director was on a time scale and therefore the last 20 minutes should have lasted an hour. It was a case of jump off the train, make out, get caught, get back in the circus, kill the bad guy, the end.

On that note I would just like to point out the worst scene in the film. The elephant picking up a crowbar and hitting August with it to kill him. At this point, if im honest, the film lost me, and dropped about 2 points from a 7.5 to a 5.5.

Last night I watched Shane Meadows’ Dead Man’s Shoes for the third time. It had been a long time since I had seen it but it still remains one of my favourite British films of the naughties. The film is not complicated but has so many issues involved in it. Covering disability, revenge, drugs and brotherhood.

There are so many lessons to be learnt from the film. But the one thing that stood out to me this time was the fact we are all responsible for our actions. After going on a massacre of revenge killings, Richard (Paddy Considine) is left with the last man who had any involvement in the death of his brother. Although the last man did not directly bully Richards brother. He played his part in his death because he did not stop the abuse his ‘mates’ were inflicting on him. The final scene defines the whole film and is extremely powerful. Richard breaks down and says he cant kill the last man, instead the last man must kill him so he can be with his brother.

The acting is nothing short of 10/10 and Paddy Considine became one of my favourite actors with his performance. You can feel his love for his brother and the way his death has effected him. There are a string of great quotes throughout the film but the real tearjerkers are in this final scene where Richard asks the man whether his brother was calling for him when they tormented him. The man replies “yes” and Richard replies “he still does”. The scene grabs you by the throat and doesnt let go until the credits roll.
